I removed all the AMD driver stuff and went back to the default 18.04 kernel and the original X.Org drivers and that seems to have solved the problem. Still strange that the AMD drivers would be that buggy, although maybe mixing all kinds of libraries, kernels, etc. may have worsened the problem,
