I re-ran "console-conf" via eth and set up the WiFi again. It again
failed with the above UI issues and ifconfig showed no connection.
However after restarting the device it was connected to the WiFi.

For people who need this fixed there is this tutorial on how to hand change the
files. This is not a long term fix but should allow printing in till the main
fix is produced.
