Same here, I'm a linux newbie and thought I'd try it for the first time on my old pc. I ran into this error when installing Ubuntu 8.10 and assumed the problem was with my old nVidia graphics card (FX 5200) which I know to be faulty from playing games on windows XP. I too have a Wacom tablet - the Volito 2 - and unplugging it solved the problem so thanks a lot; you saved me a lot of pain ;)
I haven't had time to look at Ubuntu yet but it looks pretty cool, I should've tried it ages ago... I only really need XP for games now.
