Same here..."manual nomodeset fix" and other minor workarounds didn't
helped.with previous nvidia driver e/o kernel (I can't be sure which of
them exactly..) on the same 12.04 the nomodeset worked.
Now splashscreen only on shutdown/reboot...
Grub menu changes resolution "as it should"...

Ubuntu 8.10 should be officially released in 9 days...starting from
today
I've never tried 8.10 but I can confirm this bug afflicts 8.04.
Perhaps you verified that the bug doesn't exist in a "beta" version of
8.10?

SOLVED
TO ALL FRIENDS "WORLDWIDE" (any language you use...)
This is the solution:
1) install the correct and updated (3.0.3) XPI language file, after
downloading it from Firefox website (by doing so you'll bring you
Firefox interface in your preferred language);
2) Close all Firefox window

Same here with italian version of Firefox!
I upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.0.3 and the former (3.0.1) Firefox (it) were
recognized as "not compatible" and disabled by Firefox itself.
You can fix the interface language problem by downloading and installing
the "correct" (3.0.3 compatibil

I've also tried "splashy" on my PC but it doesn't work too...wehn trying
to set a "splash" it says me [FAIL]
As suggested by a friend, I've tried to start from a "vanilla kernel"
(2.6.21) and applied the patch for bootsplash (www.bootsplash.org).
