Yes, I did an update from wily to xenial.

This machine has a long Ubuntu history (since lucid). Never had issues
with kernel mode setting so far.

I found a workaround: I connected my monitor with VGA, and did a
complete boot. After that, I connected my monitor with VGA _and_ HDMI,
and did a complete boot again.
In Gnome Settings I deactivated the monitor on VGA, and defined HDMI as
primary monitor. After that, I disconnected the VGA link

I did an update (15.10 -> 16.04). After GRUB selects Ubuntu in standard
configuration (Linux 4.4.0-21-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 18 18:34:49
UTC 2016 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux), the screen turns
