A fresh install fixes this. The problem was trying to upgrade from a
broken Feisty system.

As I said I am able to see to pair up the computer from my phone. So my
phone does see my computer. So Traz's problem is unrelated to my issue.

I'm running a fresh install of the Gutsy Kubuntu.

Addition: today I had to reboot and accidentally ran the new kernel. This time
it seemed to boot up okay. But after a while I noticed the external USB drives
didn't appear and they weren't around as dev/sdX either.
