I tried testing with several mainline kernels, but used the i386
versions when I should apparently have used the amd64 versions. None of
the i386 mainline kernels would boot. I will try again with some amd64
kernels.
Some relevant info:
The hard drive was in fact OK. I have seen the same

I originally reported this in bug 922906, but karma asked me to file a
new bug. The host locked up four times in one day.
It looks like the lockup is triggered by journal update errors.
