The latest kernel update (2.6.31-14.46) has fixed this issue. I believe the cause of the lockup was USB issues on my laptop with prior Karmic kernels. Not only did it affect suspend, but it also affected shutdown as well as startup whenever no USB audio adapter, keyboard, or mouse is connected in
