changing max_buffer_size does not help.
The soundfonts that fail to load are not even close to the 128MB default
(at least in file size), e.g.
~30MB file fails to lo
I updated from Gutsy to Hardy and I still have that problem.
Unloading and reloading both USB drivers fixes it as described above.

I also have the mixer plugin disappear.
The drag-n-drop workaround seems to work fine.

I've build libode by compiling the latest sourceforge version.
With
$ nm /usr/local/lib/libode.so | grep LastTransform
I now get

Thanks for the fast response and achievement!
But since this is on a halt and I needed other things, I moved forward
to Gutsy. So if nobody else requests or needs the backport it is fine

xmms provides /usr/lib/libxmms.so.1
xmms-dev provides /usr/lib/libxmms.so
but those are just pointers it seems, sorry I am not familiar with how
different .so versions are handled (need to read up on that)

Still with usplash 0.4-30 run with "sudo usplash" on amd64 with geforce 6800gt.
