I configured in smb.conf
interfaces = vmnet8 vmnet1
bind interfaces only = yes
so that samba is only accessable by the vmware guest.
BTW: In /etc/rc2.d vmware (S19) starts prior to samba (S20), thats the next

Lucid Beta2 has still 100HZ set on 64bit kernels. I agree with raboof to set it
to 1000HZ for desktop systems as default.
And i suggest also setting CONFIG_PREEMPT=Y for the default standard kernel
