I cannot reproduce this with dapper + updated packages. I get an icon for an audio cd. I can also play and eject the cd from the drivemount applet. Did you try and update your system? There is a new gnome-applets package in dapper-update (2.14.2-0ubuntu1). Does this fix it for you? --
