Unfortunately, you remain stuck in a 800x600 resolution. I found that
using the intel driver works just as well (or just as badly) as the vesa
driver. I'm running latest versions of everything:
libc6-xen-2.7-10ubuntu3
Actually, I made a mistake: if I reboot using drivers other than vesa my
machine hangs quietly when gdm starts up. With the vesa driver,
everything but the resolution works.

On Hardy 8.04, if the preseed file used contains any lines that have
only spaces on them, the installer errors with the following message:
debconf-set-selections:
shift: 56:
can't shift that many
It also reports that the preseed file may be corrupt. I have attached a
patch
