I also had this problem particularly with the BBC asx streams - but on
re-installing from Ubuntu Software Centre I noticed that it recommended
installing python-coherence. I installed this and all gstreamer plugins
and I can now play these streams after a second or so of buffering.

Thanks - I now think the problem was with the chipset on the Motherboard
- it was impossible to update Ubuntu - I have no problems on the other
machine I am running

Update Manager nearly always fails to install several packages with a
report about the var/cache/apt/ files being corrupted - sometimes when

No - that didn't work. The preview has now disappeared from the pdf
print dialogue box. When I press 'Print' the printer icon appears
