I have this issue, too. Please have a look into that and fix it. It can
be really annoying and lost the unsaved work as the person cannot login

@mycoma: the wireless network drivers are already in the ubuntu cd.
Install bcmwl-kernel-source_5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb and
friends (er.. patch, fakeroot, dkms, etc.. sorry I forgot the complete
dependencies)

I managed to get the sound working by following instruction for
MBP5,5/Lucid here

Basically I added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and
restart
options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55
also make sure the front speaker is not mu

I have the same problem for using Sony VPL-ES5 LCD Projector, I'm using ASUS
P5GC-VM PRO mainboard with onboard IntelĀ® 945GC Chipset I also tried GIGABYTE
GA-G31M-S2L with the same Graphic chip and I've had same problem.

Switched to Hardy, and it works perfectly now.
In Gutsy I had the problem with CMake even with the mpic++ compiler
specified, e.g.
SET( CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER "mpic++" )
In Hardy the problem is solved.
