I had some files on the desktop that contained the ending square bracket
character ( ] ) that would never preserve location on the desktop and
kept being positioned starting from position 0,0.
Example filenames:
* [9.04] Linux Setup.odt
* [9.10] Linux Setup.odt
* [10.04] Linu
Just to reiterate, this problem did not occur on my laptop before
Intrepid Ibex (I've been dual-booting since 6.06).

This behaviour still exists when dual-booting with 10.04/WinXP. The
workaround, as I've mentioned above, is to disconnect my laptop from
*ALL* power sources (inc. the battery) for a few seconds, before booting
into Windows.
