As is already mentioned in this thread it seems to be dependent on
whether the computer is swapping. I only have the problem when my RAM is
maxed out. I currently have plenty of RAM, thus it has happened rarely
and only when I am doing something very RAM-intensive.

Same here with final karmic (kubuntu, updated from jaunty).
It is a real PITA for me at the moment (have to go through a lot of
students papers and add comments to them).
If this is not some rare issue then it is a major showstopper for a lot
of people.

Karmic koala daily builds 2009-10-07 and 2009-10-06 won't install. Both
of them go to 80% and no further ("Configuring apt"). CPU is 100%.
