The menu disappears even if you don't start wxMaxima under Unity. I
installed wxMaxima after switching back to the default gnome desktop and
it didn't have a menu to start with. Funny thing is that if i install
indicator-applet-appmenu and add it to the gnome panel, it shows the
wxMaxima menu
Yes, it would be nice to have that option back, especially since it
doesn't hurt anyone.

It would be great if this patch were included in Lucid. I'm one of the
people who read column-formatted scientific papers and fixing text
selection is definitely a must. Even if there were regressions, the
situation without the patch is much worse.
