I can confirm that the nosync workaround worked for me.
I tried to upgrade Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 on a netbook using a SD card with

I would not regard this as a duplicate of 446146 because one key symptom
of this issue is that one would have to find the following error message
in the syslog:
