Experiencing same behavior here. Im my case, though, there is a large

Just tried as per your instructions. I could not abort with the ctrl-c, leaving
me to use a 'sudo killall hardy' from a second terminal.

Yes, I did restart after upgrading, but no change.
What I also did was install the Mozilla version of Firefox 2.0.0.8, and
the problem is now solved. It also didn't happen with the Ubuntu version

I have this issue, too. Edgy/GIMP 2.2.13
When I type "BlaEtc" as text in the GIMP it shows an
additional "a" before the "Etc". The "a" is coming from "Bla"; the last
letter of the line before the tab is always repeated.

Actually this Debian bug 337526 describes a crash when registering a new
user, the issue described here is a crash when the last user logs out.
