I was able to get fglrx-updates running with the following work around:
>From init Terminal Mode ( cntl + alt F1) ran sudo apt-get install

Purging and reinstalling fglrx amd drivers has worked can now reach the desktop
all seems to functioning as expected.

It appears to me to be unique to ubuntu , as I get no such bug in either
debian wheezy or sid. I don't know if that helps or not, I hope so.

This has been a problem I have noticed for some period of time. Just as
the handoff is made into plymouth there is a bright flash it is really
startling when it happens. I'd call it a searing flash. It has grown
worse since there was an updated plymouth as part of an update possibly
a week or two

If you are running ubuntu 12.04 even if you are running gnome-shell, you
have compiz and unity installed.
To verify go to terminal, type the following two commands and note the
output.

Todays 2.7 python update has already fixed the problem. Apport would not
let file a bug report last night against it, when I tried to reproduce, but
is back to running fine now anyway.

I am not getting this bug to happen now, I have switched to my computer
which uses Intel 3000 graphics, where the one I reported the crash on is an
earlier I7 without the 3000 series graphics and with a AMD ATi 6700 series
gdm. I was having no end of crashes after recent update on that machine.

libllvm2.9 update is the only update not applied at time of crash. Other than
the one lib all other updates current at time of crash.
