I think that the main problem here is NetworkManager.
I don't mind that after a while of no signal, the network is disconnected.
However, the system should be able to recover from this gracefully, and retry
once proper signal is available again.
I think this is what is really broken in Hardy now,

Unfortunately, this breaks playing files on mounted drives with vlc from
Nautilus.
Background: the new locators, like ftp:// and smb://, are interpreted by vlc as
a protocol, rather than as a file handle.

Might have to do with theold RT driver in Hardy. Then, this might be

Same behavior here: I have a wireless and a wired connection, and both show the
same:
Clicking one time does not un-tick. Second time: sometimes a real disconnect
(and shown !)
Only then, it's possible to re-connect to the networks.
It is consistent behavior. Reproduces really well.

- at opening a text file I get a strange authentication required pop-up, for a

I have exaxctly the same problems. Due to this, my Ubuntu computer has
started to be a nuisance, especially because downgrading back to 7.* is
impossible, and gvfs cannot be disabled without removing Nautilus and
the Ubuntu desktop. What a pain is hardy !
