There were many services "waiting" and one that was "running" : cups-
browsed.service. I did it several times and this was always the case.
Nothing was listed as "stopping", although all were of type = stop.

I tried the drm-intel-nightly kernel (from 18 June) and still experience
the same problems as originally reported. I followed the steps in
comment #31 to attach logs - those logs attached. The failure with
these logs was slightly different though - behaviour was that I could
see the login prompt,
I've had to stop using my external monitor completely to avoid the
problem. I tried turning off screen locking and screen dimming to avoid
it, but that didn't help. The only thing I have found that leaves me in
a reliable working state is to not use the external monitor.

When applying updates to a 12.10 install, the unity launcher re-
introduces items, specifically the default webapps of Ubuntu One and
Amazon, that I have previously removed. I have seen this (incorrect)
behavior on webapps. I do not know if it happens for native default
apps.
Sorry, I haven't had a chance to get a powered USB hub. I did rearrange
things so that the webcam goes directly into one port, and the other
things (keyboard, mouse, ethernet) all go off the hub and I haven't had
any problems since doing that. So chances are that your power theory is

Text for the icons doesn't show up. Nothing happens if you mouseover.
However, if I click in the big open space, it react as if the icon were
there (i.e,. launch the Software Center for that app).
Screenshots attached. One shows the "See 44 more" tag, the other shows
what happens when clicking on
Thunderbird also lost ability to remember passwords through an upgrade
(specifically an address book connection to a password protected ldap
server). Seems like that is probably another symptom of the same
problem? If not, let me know and I can file a separate bug.
