Also does not work if i use Alt-F2 to run gucharmap.
BUT
If I compile the source myself (from the ubuntu repos) and then run the
resulting binary from either the command line or Alt-F2, everything
works.

Same problem. Using nvidia 8600GT. Settings are not remembered using
either Preferences->Screen Resolution or Administration->Screens and
Graphics. My monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050, it keeps
defaulting to 1400x1050.
