In Ubuntu Saucy I get:
$ setxkbmap us crd -print | xkbcomp -

It turns out that this problem was caused by someone or something
modifying my copy of /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev. Reinstalling the
xkb-data package fixed it. Sorry for the noise.

working. If I go to System Settings... - Sound, the only option in the
Play sound through box is Dummy Output.
I noticed that there is a kernel oops in my dmesg which looks related.
