I'm having the same type of issue. It seems to pop up when there is a
unity issue like when I have the auto-hide turned on for the Nav bar and
I try to switch desktops or when I tried to move a Chrome tab out of the
current window into its own window.

I'm not able to recreate the problem I had before. I recently had some
issues with my lib32 libraries and had to reinstall the packages.

I found an answer. I still had apparmor installed with likewise-open
and cups. Apparently apparmor is no longer necessary as part of ubuntu-
desktop. After uninstalling/ purging it, everything worked great.
Martin--I meant that there was nothing in the /tmp/log file and I don't
know why.

I was not able to get any output from the new cups.conf file.
I was, however, able to start cupsd with 'sudo cupsd' from the command
line with no errors shown.
Maybe we should change this bug to the upstart package.

I can confirm this bug too. To fix it, I just had to change my timezone

Martin Bergner is right, xorg is set up to choose among a list of
possible resolutions (i.e. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) depending on the
monitor detection during boot up. As such this is not a bug unless the
above methods do not work.
