I found an answer. I still had apparmor installed with likewise-open and cups. Apparently apparmor is no longer necessary as part of ubuntu- desktop. After uninstalling/ purging it, everything worked great. Martin--I meant that there was nothing in the /tmp/log file and I don't know why. -- Y
