during the installation process through Ubuntu Software Center this
error was generated. I was only installing this Virtualbox package.
Virtualbox will run but when I try to power on a vm it errors

Never mind. Somehow I accidentally managed to delete my entire system
notification area on the Gnome panel. That's why the icon never showed
up. Please close this bug, it's my own dumb fault.

OK, I uninstalled gaim. "sudo dpkg -l | grep gaim" shows no packages,
nothing installed. I used synaptic to remove the packages with the
"remove completely" checked for each.
I deleted .gaim with "rm -rf ~/.gaim"
Now, I install gaim: "sudo apt-get install gaim"

When I closed gaim, the system tray icon remained. Clicking on the
system tray icon opened gaim again.
