Fixed for me by the following package upgrades fixed the problem for me:

0.2.16+r359+14.10.20140625-0ubuntu2~utopic1)

0.2.16+r359+14.10.20140625-0ubuntu2~utopic1)
The problem was indeed related to the Too much work for IRQ 3 message
I received during boot of the -generic kernel. Switching the Infrared in
BIOS from IRQ3 to IRQ4 solved all my problems! I will therefore re-
close.

Re-opening since this bug still occurs with current Hardy kernel on my
machine

I just tried using Feisty's 2.6.20-16-lowlatency kernel. It boots nicely
and I am able to use jackd in realtime mode without problems. I still
have to get fglrx running again, though.

Same issue here on a Thinkpad T60.
A BIOS upgrade to current version 2.21 did not help. The problem only
occurs with the 2.6.22-14-rt kernel, 2.6.22-14-generic boots fine. I
also tested with 2.6.24-12-rt from hardy alpha, which shows the same
symtomes: The system freezes after printing Loading

Yup! Creating a symlink from /var/run/.gdm_socket to /tmp/.gdm_socket
solves the problem, indicating that it is indeed the same issue as in
bug #76632. Should I file a bug against f-u-s-a updtream now?

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet
Since my recent upgrade to feisty, f-u-s-a needs 100% cpu. The context-
menu, where the names of the users used to be, stays empty, leaving me
with a totally broken f-u-s-a at the moment.
** Affects: fast-user-switch-applet
Unfortunately there are more problems related to gconf.
When running gnome-theme-manager I get the following error:
The default theme schemas could not be found on your system.
This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or
that your gconf is configured incorrectly.
Is the new package already in the repos? I'm asking because I am also
affected from the bug and it still exists on my machine.
Thanks,
Jochen!

This seems to be fixed with the current version of the edgy packages.

Public bug reported:
My install is current Edgy. Since an update a few days ago, the keybindings for
metacity don't work anymore (i.e. changing workspaces with ctrl+alt+cursor is
disfunct)
Also the section for the window management shortcuts in the
keyboard-shortcuts-capplet is empty.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: usplash
The usplash image of the edgy live cd looks like color inverted. It also
exits long before gnome/gdm starts up
I will attach a screenshot later on.
On other machines I have access to, everything looks fine.

So it was a problem on my box indeed. Sorry for not telling this earlier...
