Since I have a patch that fixes this issue, would it be helpful to people if I
make a PPA containing the patched command-not-found? Then at least there will
be a solution for people until someone from Ubuntu eventually

No, the printer does nothing. As I explained, this is not a problem with
the connection as the test page prints fine and I can also print fine
from Firefox. I noticed it was reporting everything as having printed
fine, which is why I was so confused and unable to find any useful
debugging info.

I've had a fiddle with the boot options, and it looks like it's actually
booting OK (the text-based login screen briefly appears). I'm guessing
the problem then is actually with starting the xserver, which for some
reason irrevocably blanks the screen.

Attempting to boot the 3.5.0-17.28 kernel (with the extras package

3.5.0-16.24 boots fine, but has the same problem with USB devices not

After upgrading to the latest kernel version, I am unable to boot, and
receive just a blank screen. Removing the 'quiet splash $vt_handoff'
options (but keeping nomodeset, which I normally use), I get a flashing
cursor, but nothing else. I can boot into recovery mode and
I can't tell, as I jumped straight from 0-15 to 0-17, and 0-16 isn't
available from apt-get. Is there another way to install the 0-16 kernel
from the repositories?

No. At the time I had a combination of two different mirrors in my
sources.list file (by mistake). Correcting that fixed the problem.

For the record, this bug also affects my Dell Optiplex 755 desktop
system when selecting 'hibernate' from the system menu. Although
occasionally hibernate will work fine, more than half of the time I will
be left with a flashing cursor and the computer will not power off as
expected. Manually
I finally managed to get the problem to go away. I did an 'apt-get purge
nvidia-common', then I installed the latest kernel update, and then
reinstalled nvidia-common, and everything seems to be fine now.

I have just had my bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305526) marked a
duplicate of this one. For me, the NVidia drivers and nvidia-common are
already installed.
Running sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-{headers,restricted-
modules}-`uname -r` did not solve the problem, but just did the
