The alpha6 release is many years old (it was released 2011), and has
not been supported for a long time. No modern day assets are usable in
this release. MakeHuman has since had several stable releases and even
changed the source code language.

This bug is discussed upstream. There it seems solved, but it is stated
that the ubuntu package need to be updated.

I have the same problem. In virtualbox, fbcon is so slow it makes
console mode next to unusable, but I haven't found any good way to
disable it.
This problem persists in beta1 of karmic.
