It isn't a remote session thing. I am unable to install or update
anything and I am logged in locally.

The issue has returned for me too. After an update a while back it went
away then an update or two later it came back but with a lesser
severity. Most of the time I can launch Workstation just fine but every
once in a while I still need to manually start the service. I have been

This issue and a couple others seem to have been resolved in a recent
update. However I have not using Workstation regularly recently so I
will hold off saying this has been fixed until I have fully tested it.
