Well, to my great surprise, this morning's fix did work after a time.
Immediatly after the fix was downloaded and installed by apt, nothing
was changed. Half an hour later, all is well.
This is a new idea for me. I have always believed that if you put a fix
in a program it has immediate effect.
Just performed an update to Quantal. This problem is not fixed in
LibreOffice-Calc. This can be handled by an experienced user but a
naive user would chuck the whole operating system and retreat to
Windows. It is more important than this log seems to indicate.

Well, that is interesting on several fronts. The new driver does what I
need, so I will stick with it. I am retired and not much of a computer
user. People using development suites may have trouble, and this is, as
far as I am concerned, an ongoing problem with the driver which, all

fglrx will not load at all on my AMD/ATI RS780 chip set (on my mobo).
Doesn't seem to make much difference, as my system runs just fine in DVI
mode, and the one game I have that requires accelerated sound and video
