Just wanted to pile on. #77 without #38 works for my Latitude CPx with
Karmic. #38 kind of worked. It didn't boot up muted, but would change
the volume levels to 38% master and 75% PCM (I keep them at 54%/50%).
I changed #38 back and applied #77. Yay!

I did something similar, though I don't have a Dell...
I updated the BIOS and drivers through Windows (when I finally got the
NIC working). It seems to have soled the problem for me.

I'm having this same problem. I'm using a home-built PC (ASUS P5GC-
MX/1333 motherboard) with a built-in NIC (Attansic Technology Corp.)
Same exact issue.
My wife is getting miffed about this! LOL

This was a 8.04 machine. I upgraded to 8.10, then 9.04 through Update
Manager. So, not a fresh install here...
