I just managed to get pulse git head building. He has taken a completely different approach to fixing this. The code was already in git. If you start the pavucontrol app there is a new tab for Configuration. Under that tab you can choose from a drop down... analog in + sdif out stereo out ...

I have pulseaudio-esound-compat installed. I went through all of the tabs in Sound Preferences and there isn't a choice for use sound server. There is a choice for 'Enable software sound mixing (ESD)' which I have selected. I had this selected before and pulse wasn't loading. I installed

Could this be an explanation of where the disconnect is? If you set essid or key in other wireless drivers while they are down, they remember this fact and then process these when the link comes up. zd1211rw is trying to execute the essid/key set immediately and returning an error that the link is
