Workarounds using a text boot works, but is quite ugly. If having multiple encrypted disks each needs to be separately unlocked (plymouth feeds the first password to the following ones). Also the password prompts either not visible or aligned to a very far right which makes it hard to notice when

Like #18 ran into this when updating to maverick. As both occured in VMware guest installations I suspect that in that specific case vmware- tools caused the incomplete transition. I also saw messed up shutdown orders, but not in all installations. You may also have a look at rc0.d for halting.
