I noticed it doesn't matter what you set the "Turn screen off..."
setting to, it doesn't seem to adhere to it. It seems to do whatever it
jolly well feels like.

telepathy-indicator 0.3.0-0ubuntu3 is in Quantal main at this point.
However it does not fix the above issue.
For reference I'm not using Unity (rather GNOME Shell) with Ubuntu GNOME
Remix.

Mathieu: The assertion is incorrect about it being simply because of
Ubuntu-mono, which I'm not using as my icon set. I'm using Gnome's
default icons (with local overrides from my Shell testing).

This issue is pretty apparent in Gnome Shell, or any default Gnome
desktop which doesn't use the indicator applets at all. So you're
basically stuck with either an invisible nm-applet, or in the case of
Shell you get a fallback icon (because it's smarter about that).
