I have been plagued by this problem for at least a year. It was a
motivating factor in upgrading my system from 11.04 to 12.04, and to my
dismay, the install of 12.04 worked properly for a while... then went
back to opening Excel files in gedit.

Ubuntu's reputation is certainly being harmed by this. There should be
a 10.10.1 release, strictly because this bug is something that cannot be
remedied by patching/updating after install. The installer is the
problem, it is known to be dangerous, and continuing to distribute it
this way is
I chose use entire partition and it erased every partition on my
netbook, which I most certainly did not tell it to do. Now the restore
partition on my netbook is gone, and now I'm thoroughly screwed since
the netbook didn't come with a restore CD (since there's no optical
drive).
