Public bug reported:

Description: Ubuntu 17.10
Release: 17.10
alsa-base:
  Installed: 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5 500
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

My laptop goes to sleep automatically after about an hour idle.
Recently, when I wake it up, there are no audio output devices, neither
the internal speakers nor the headphone jack produce any audio, although
my computer still appears as if it's playing audio (e.g. youtube videos
will play, the sound test files act as if they are playing back).

Logging out fixes this issue, the speakers resume working on the login
screen. I don't consider this a reasonable fix, however, as it can
disrupt my work, requiring me to close and reopen all my software.
