This is now fixed in Radiance (awaiting upload, etc).
For all other themes, you need to add a style which includes a
bg[NORMAL] and match that to ido-offscreen-scale. Something like this
will work:

Links in Firefox awesome bar illegible with Karmic default UNR theme
The reason they seem similar is probably because the same person made
them. The MeMenu version were made per design team specification but
have been judged not to fit the bill, we'll be replacing them soon with
a better panel styled version.

are now drawn by the murrine engine in the current release

Scroll bars are pixmaps and do not accept custom colors
Currently, limitations in gtk prevent us from displaying the progress
bar per design. The current solution is a work-around.

I think adding a gconf key to scale the bg is the right solution. I will
