The NewHuman theme was not in the final Intrepid release, only the pre-
release versions. My guess is that you have an older version installed
which requires an older version of the murrine engine (a newer version
of the murrine theme engine and a theme named DarkRoom was included in
Intrepid).
A decision was made not to use this specific functionality because
similar, more familiar functionality already exists. I do not see this
as a bug in any way, but as a wish.

This sounds like a problem with the gnome-settings-daemon, not the human
theme or darkroom theme, otherwise this would affect more people

Martin, if you are running compiz on those machines try turning it off
and see what happens...there is also a bug in the nvidia drivers for
some cards which causes strange effects.

Wow, that looks pretty weird. I have never heard of this problem from
anyone else though...not sure what is causing this. My guess is that
there is some strange happening from updating again and again from an
early alpha or such.

Apparently you still have the gtk theme installed but not the required
ubuntulooks gtk2 engine

As I made the darkroom theme, ubuntu is upstream for this. As I already
mentioned the bug has been fixed and is in the waiting line for a
release. If you want it fixed now, install the package from my ppa
