Actually, I think that the wrong icon is being used in the menu. The
correct version to be used in menus is the one found in the context menu
(right click on the panel to see it)

Using a fixed pixel size would be a mistake, as on very large
resolutions it would be tiny.
I have no idea why this is happening but it sounds like the Xserver is
not reporting the correct resolution or such.

The current splash should not have these problems. I have taken a 24bit
png file exported from inkscape, opened it in gimp and semi-flattened
the transparency to the bg color defined for the splash/wallpaper.
So, there should be no more black pixels around the edges or funky
aliasing problems. How

It seems to me that this is a problem with radio buttons being used in
the wrong place and/or the wrong way.
Checkboxes should be used for lists in which several items can be
selected/active. Radio buttons, on the other hand, should toggle the
selected/active item so that only one can be "on" at a
