Sorry for the late reply. The term 'frontend' scared me off :)
The frontend used is libsane-perl. i did a few runs with other frontends before
posting this comment. Seems that this behaviour happens only with libsane-perl.

Using a Canon CanoScan LiDE 25
The scanner light stays on even after closing gscan2pdf, rather than
switching off. To overcome this using the same application, there are 2
ways:

Sorry, i don't quit understand the "... command line..." part. However,
i've installed XSane and gscan2pdf (that's what come up when i typed
"scanimage") via Ubuntu Software Center.
