I don't think animated cursors are the cause. I installed and switched
to a non-animated cursor theme, and the problem still occurs with
roughly the same frequency.
If I read it correctly, the upstream bug report suggests that the
problem occurs where the system needs to update the cursor image,
GLX is not the cause of this problem. I disabled it in my configuration
weeks ago and still encounter this problem daily.

I also encounter this problem three or four times per day. I have three
monitors on two Nvidia Quadro FX cards, using the nvidia 177 binary
driver on 8.10.
I found that when the problem strikes, I can re-enable the mouse with the
following steps:
1) Select a window using ALT+TAB.
2) Open the win

I also experienced this bug. At best, it's a nuisance, but it could
render the system unusable for some users. It's exacerbated by the fact
that it's not immediately obvious that anything is wrong--it could be
some time before the user notices any problems, making it harder to
identify the cause.
