VirtualBox works fine running the 2.6.24-18 kernel and associated
VirtualBox modules. I just uninstalled the old virtualbox-ose-
modules-2.6.24-16 package, then installed the virtualbox-ose-modules-
generic metapackage. No reboot

out because their VMs don't work and don't know what to do:
Open a terminal.
Open Synaptic Package Manager by issuing the command: gksudo synaptic

I'd like to add to the last comment that regardless of the power
preferences the screensaver needs to be disabled as well. Only disabling
power options is not enough.

I've since learned that ATI cards have extraordinarily poor driver
support in Linux and have stopped using them. I've never had the problem
with an nVidia card. If I have time today I can test to see if the issue
still occurs on a fully updated 7.04 installation using the ATI binary
