Same problem for me. I have a Toshiba U305-S2804. I recently upgraded to 10.04 (via fresh install, not upgrade), and suddenly Ubuntu doesn't recognise my external mic. In sound preferences, I have no option to choose between inputs.
I upgraded ALSA to 1.0.23 last night (compiled from the source).
