changing the bios settings as described in comment #16 didn't make any
difference for me (not clear enough to notice, anyway).

I'm experiencing the same problem on a Dell Latitude D600. For me the
behavior seems to depend on the speed of the button click: if I click
(or rather, release) the button fast enough, it works as expected, but
if doing it slowly I see the "click and hold" behavior. In my case I'm
