OK I managed to fix the issue by using this method:

problem had probably occurred in 17.10, but since there was no need for
an update to EFI entries and I haven't tried to access the BIOS setup
for a long time, I didn't notice it.

I got a similar problem after upgrading to 18.04 (kernel 4.15.0-20). In
my case the error returned by the efibootmgr is "Could not add entry to
