I just had the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 - all emails but one were

In my case that's
xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS //extends desktop to external monitor:
xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto // switches back to laptop
display only:

I confirm that this is an issue with the Display settings GUI dialog.
xrandr from the command line works without any glitches.

Oddly enough every once in a while mirroring seems to work. I was just
able to set it up correctly - only to for it to fail again the next time
I tried. I gave it a couple more shots and they all failed.
