I can't use a later kernel version, because none of the kernels that fix
the problem are part of the LTS Trusty Tahr release. I think this bug
is still valid, and needs to be resolved in a LTS update. However, I'm
not sure that I can do anything about that at this time.

The latest testing I have done is to reinstall Edubuntu:
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04
Package: linux-image-3.13.0-32-generic 3.13.0-32.57 [modified:
boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic]
Then, instead of using the default GUI, Unity, I installed the Gnome
Fallback which comes with the package.
Use of
** Tags removed: kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc4
** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc1
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)

I have narrowed down the fix to somewhere between 3.16.0-0316 and
3.17.0.0317-rc1.
With 3.17.0.0317-rc1:
manual suspend recovers properly
closing lid suspend recovers properly
laptop does not crash when docking

I performed the bios update.
Using the command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date

I believe I am having the same or similar issue. Running Edubuntu
(ubuntu 14.04 LTS) on a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop.
Symptoms: if lid is closed, causing the computer to go into suspend
(according to the settings), it will crash when the lid is opened again.
