Sorry, I was a bit imprecise: ido_init() needs to be called after
gtk_init() and before you create the
indicator-datime installs the panel into /usr/lib/x86_64, where gnome-
control-center doesn't find it. G-c-c then assumes this is an external
panel and executes the Exec line, which is `gnome-control-center
indicator-datetime`. That's when the whole thing starts again.

All the ones coming from gtk, on both the desktop and in gtk
applications. Exceptions are qt and xul-based apps, which seem to not
allow spacebar to activate at all.
I can see your initial confusion, I had to try this myself a lot and
talked to a ui design
Gtk menus don't do that anymore (except for check menu items). Again,
why should the indicator menus behave differently from other menus on
the system?

I knew what you meant.
This is a bug in all the other indicators then. Even though it might be
convenient in your case, having consistent menus across the system is
more valuable.

Hitting space activates an item in every menu on the system. Why should
the messaging menu behave differently?
Which app indicator has this behavior? I tried with a couple of them and
activating with space works on all of them.
