Well actually it IS an issue with the modem/router.
The previous version of ubuntu (windows and maybe OSX caches dns request
or work differently) workaround this router bug. I seems that the
workaround was causing other issues (see the 2 bugs mentioned earlier).
Did you try the solutions I
Well on company network they don't use home routers with buggy

From libc.NEWS file:
Starting with version 2.9-8, unified IPv4/IPv6 lookup have been enabled
in the glibc's resolver. This is faster, fixes numerous of bugs, but is
problematic on some broken DNS servers and/or wrongly configured
firewalls.
If such a DNS server is detected, the resolver
an other option will be to install nscd (apt-get install nscd) that will
cache dns requests locally (windows and macos does the same IIRC)

With another connection (UDP, login/password + TLS key) I don't remember

Well when I was talking about blacklisting the ipv6 module (that is not
a module anymore, but anyway) it was talking about a configuration
option (like on RH system) to easily prevent the loading of the module
on boot, but I was not talking about blacklisting it _by default_ (as

by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups
This has nothing todo with network-manager or linux kernel. And not even
libc as dig doesn't use libc functions to resolve names.
I think that this can be worked around with tweaking /etc/gai.conf or by
blacklisting the ipv6 kernel module
